Can You Work While Waiting for Your Guard Card in California?

You’ve completed your security guard training, submitted your Live Scan fingerprints, and paid your application fees. Now you’re waiting for your California guard card to arrive.

But what happens if a security company offers you a job before your physical guard card arrives?

Can you work while waiting for your guard card in California?

The answer is yes, but only if the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) has already approved and issued your security guard registration.

California allows approved security guards to begin working before receiving their physical registration card in the mail, provided they carry the required documentation.

However, submitting an application or completing training does not automatically authorize you to begin working.

Let’s explain exactly what California law requires.

Yes. Under California Business and Professions Code Section 7583.17, security guards may work while waiting for their physical guard card to arrive if their registration has already been approved by BSIS.

To legally work before receiving your physical card, you must:

  1. Have an approved and issued BSIS security guard registration.
  2. Carry a printed hard copy of your approved registration from the state’s official license verification website.
  3. Carry a valid picture identification card while working.
  4. Meet the applicable security guard training requirements.

Important: Your application must be approved. An application that is pending, under review, or awaiting background check results does not qualify.

For example, if BSIS approves your guard card application on Monday, but your physical card does not arrive until two weeks later, you may be able to begin working immediately using your printed approval and valid photo identification.

You do not necessarily have to wait for the physical card to arrive.

No.

If your California guard card application is still pending approval, you cannot begin performing duties that legally require a BSIS security guard registration.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings among new security guard applicants.

Completing your initial training, submitting your application, and passing your Live Scan background check are important steps, but they do not replace official registration approval.

A pending application generally means BSIS has not completed the application review or issued the registration.

Possible reasons include:

  • Your application is awaiting processing.
  • BSIS is waiting for background check information.
  • Your application requires additional documentation.
  • There is an issue with your application information.
  • The Bureau has not completed its licensing determination.

Until your registration is officially issued, you should not accept assignments requiring an active California guard card.

Remember: Application submitted does not mean application approved.

California guard card processing times can vary depending on application volume, background checks, and whether the application contains missing or incorrect information.

BSIS publishes application processing information to help applicants understand current timelines.

As of October 26, 2026, the Bureau lists a 60-day target processing timeframe for initial security guard applications.

This is a target, not a guarantee that every application will be approved within 60 days.

Some applications may be processed sooner, while others may take longer.

Several issues can delay the approval process, including:

1. Incomplete Application Information

Incorrect names, missing information, or application errors may require additional review.

2. Live Scan Fingerprint Issues

If BSIS does not receive the required fingerprint results, your application may be delayed.

3. Background Check Review

Certain criminal history information may require additional evaluation before BSIS makes a licensing decision.

4. Missing Application Fees

Applications must include the required fees to be processed.

5. Application Deficiencies

If BSIS requests additional information, failing to respond promptly may extend your processing time.

Applicants should monitor their application status and respond to official BSIS correspondence when necessary.

Before accepting a security guard position, verify that your registration has been issued.

You can check your guard card status using California’s official license verification system.

Go to the official Department of Consumer Affairs license search system.

Select the appropriate license type and enter your identifying information.

Look for your security guard registration and verify that it has been issued and is current.

If your registration is approved, print a hard copy of the official registration information.

Keep your printed registration approval and valid photo identification with you while performing security guard duties until your physical card arrives.

Tip: Do not rely on an application payment receipt, Live Scan receipt, or training certificate as proof that BSIS has approved your registration.

These documents serve different purposes and do not replace an issued guard card registration.

If BSIS has approved your registration but you have not received your physical guard card, you must carry the documentation California requires.

DocumentRequired?
Approved BSIS registration printoutYes
Valid photo identificationYes
Physical guard cardNot required while awaiting delivery if you meet the printout requirements
Live Scan receiptNot a substitute for approval
Training certificateMust be retained as required; not a substitute for approval
Application payment confirmationNot a substitute for approval

Your employer may also request copies of your training certificates and other employment documentation.

According to BSIS, applicants should generally receive their physical security guard registration card by mail within approximately three weeks after the Bureau issues the registration.

Delivery times may vary.

While waiting, approved applicants may use the official registration printout and valid photo identification as permitted under California law.

Make sure your mailing address is accurate and current with BSIS to avoid unnecessary delivery problems.

Not necessarily.

California requires security guards to complete specific training before registration and additional training after registration.

Applicants must complete the required initial Power to Arrest training before BSIS issues their registration.

A & C Security Group offers initial security guard training to help applicants begin the licensing process.

California also requires newly registered security guards to complete 32 additional hours of security officer skills training.

Generally, the additional training must be completed as follows:

  • First 16 hours: Within 30 days of registration.
  • Remaining 16 hours: Within six months of registration.

Additional employer-related training deadlines may also apply.

Completing these training requirements is important for maintaining compliance with California’s security guard regulations.

At A & C Security Group, we offer training options for individuals beginning their security careers and guards completing their additional training requirements.

Our All-in-One Security Guard Training Package — $515 includes the initial training and additional security officer skills training, totaling 40 hours.

This option is ideal for students who want to complete their required training through one training provider.

Yes!

Although you cannot begin working in a position requiring a BSIS guard registration before approval, you can still prepare for employment.

While waiting for your guard card, consider:

  • Researching security companies hiring in your area.
  • Preparing your resume.
  • Applying for positions that accept applicants awaiting licensing.
  • Attending job interviews.
  • Completing additional required security guard training.
  • Preparing for your first security assignment.

Always be transparent with potential employers about your licensing status.

If your application is still pending, explain that you are waiting for BSIS approval.

Once your registration is issued, you may be able to begin working without waiting for the physical card to arrive, provided you meet California’s documentation requirements.

If your application has been pending longer than expected, start by checking your registration status.

Next, review your application information and any correspondence from BSIS.

Make sure your Live Scan fingerprints were submitted using the correct security guard fingerprinting form.

If you believe your application is delayed, contact BSIS to determine whether additional information is needed.

Avoid submitting duplicate applications without first confirming the appropriate next steps.

A & C Security Group offers security guard application assistance for individuals who need help navigating the application process.
