Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a BSIS Firearms Permit, applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or have permanent legal status.
  • Possess a valid BSIS Guard Card or other qualifying license (e.g., Private Investigator, PPO, Alarm Agent).
  • Pass a criminal history background check through the FBI and DOJ.
  • Successfully complete the Firearms Assessment to demonstrate judgment and restraint.
  • Complete BSIS-approved Power to Arrest and Firearms Training Courses.

BSIS Firearms Training & Qualification Our 14-hour course includes: Classroom Training (8 hours): Firearm safety and handling. Legal responsibilities of carrying and using firearms. Use of force and de-escalation techniques. Range Training (6 hours): Practical firearm handling with live fire exercises. Qualify with the caliber of weapon to be carried on duty. Firearms Assessment Applicants complete an assessment to evaluate their ability to exercise judgment, self-control, and restraint while carrying a firearm.
